ECU Remapping in Ashby-de-la-Zouch
Nothing much sits on Ashby-de-la-Zouch's doorstep. Loughborough is a little over eleven miles away, Hinckley closer to fifteen and Nuneaton further still, so almost every trip out of town is a proper drive rather than a hop. That gives local cars a healthier mileage diet than most, and it changes what is worth doing to them.
Real miles, and what they do to an engine
Look at where Ashby actually sits. The nearest town of any real size is Loughborough at just over eleven miles, Hinckley is nearer fifteen and Nuneaton a shade further again. Whatever you drive here, you are covering distance to reach most things and you are covering it on open road rather than in a queue. That is a far kinder week for an engine than a city car ever gets, and it decides which kind of map is worth your money.
Diesels in particular thrive on that pattern. A particulate filter needs the exhaust hot and held hot for a sustained stretch before it can burn off what it has collected, and fifteen miles at a settled speed gives it exactly that. So if you are in Ashby and your filter is still loading faster than it clears, your driving is not the culprit, and that is genuinely useful to know before anyone starts quoting you for parts.
It also makes the economy argument a real one instead of a sales line. A map biased towards efficiency only pays for itself if you cover enough miles for small savings to accumulate, and a town where nothing is close tends to produce drivers who do. There is more on how that bias gets built, and when it is not worth the money, on economy remapping in Loughborough.
What we change, and what we will not promise
Every map starts by reading the original calibration off your ECU and keeping it. Then the engine gets logged on the road, so we can see what it is doing rather than what a file somewhere says it ought to be doing, and fuelling, boost and timing are adjusted around that. Afterwards it gets logged again, because the only way to know a change did its job is to measure it. The visit usually runs an hour to ninety minutes.
What you will not get from us is a percentage over the phone. Two cars wearing the same badge can be in very different states of health, and a figure quoted before anybody has looked at yours is a guess dressed up as a specification. What we will tell you is where in the rev range the difference lands, which on most turbocharged engines is the middle, and whether that is the part of the range you actually spend your time in.
Because your factory file is saved before anything is written, none of this is permanent. The car can go back to exactly the state it was in when we arrived, which matters if you are selling it, handing a lease back or having a warranty conversation with a dealer. Putting it back takes very little time, and asking about it costs you nothing.
At the far end of our patch, so ring before you plan anythingTell us the car and roughly where in Ashby it sits, and we will agree a time that works rather than guess at a window.
Call 07773 694570Twenty three miles north west, and how we work that
Ashby is roughly twenty three miles north west of the workshop in Lutterworth, which puts it at the far corner of the area we cover, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. It means a visit here gets planned into a day rather than squeezed in on the way past. We agree a proper time with you, and we want the make, model, year and engine before setting off so that what comes out of the van suits your vehicle first time.
This page also covers Packington and Shellbrook. If you are closer to one of the neighbouring places there is a page for that instead: Measham is a little over three miles away, Coalville about five, and Outwoods under three. Same service and same van either way, it is only a question of which name sits nearest to where the car is parked.
Working at the vehicle is the normal arrangement. A driveway is ideal and a quiet street is usually fine, and since nearly all of the job happens from inside the car the weather rarely decides anything. You are welcome to bring it down to Rugby Road in Lutterworth instead, though at this distance most people would rather we made the journey.
The work we turn away
A remap is not a repair and we will not sell it as one. If an engine is down on power because a turbo is tired, an injector is leaking or a sensor is reading wrong, adding torque hides the symptom for a few weeks and then finds the weak point for you, usually at the worst possible moment. We ask about warning lights, recent garage work and how it has been running before agreeing to anything, and that conversation sometimes ends with us saying no.
We also do not remove, blank or emulate particulate filters, EGR valves or AdBlue systems, on any vehicle, for any reason anyone has yet put to us. Removal fails an MOT and leaves the car unlawful to use on the road. What we do instead is diagnose those systems properly, clean and force regenerate where that is the answer, and repair them so they work as designed. DPF cleaning and diagnostics in Loughborough sets out how that runs.
Remapping in Ashby-de-la-Zouch: your questions answered
Twenty three miles out. Will you really come to Ashby?
Yes, and it is worth being straight about what that means. Ashby is at the far north west edge of the area we cover, so the visit is planned into a day rather than fitted around something else. We agree a firm time with you instead of offering a vague window, and we want the vehicle details in advance so we turn up with the right equipment for it.
What actually happens while you are at the car?
The original calibration is read off the ECU and saved, the engine is logged on the road so we can see how it behaves under load, the map is written and loaded for that specific vehicle, and then it is logged again to confirm the change did what it was meant to. Allow an hour, sometimes ninety minutes. A few vehicles read and write more slowly and we will say so in advance.
I cover a lot of open road miles. Is an economy bias the right choice for me?
Quite possibly, because that is the one situation where it repeats. A saving per mile is only worth having if you do enough miles for it to add up, and Ashby drivers generally do. The catch is that it only works if you drive the same way afterwards. If the extra willingness tempts you into using it, the saving disappears, and we would rather say that now than have you disappointed later.
Can the car be returned to how it was?
Yes. Your factory file is copied off and kept before a single value is altered, so the vehicle can be put back exactly as it arrived. People ask for that when they are selling, when a lease is ending, or when a dealer wants it standard before discussing a warranty claim. It is a short job and it costs you nothing to ask about it up front.
Does my insurer need to know?
Yes, and it is a brief phone call. A remap counts as a modification in the same way a suspension change or a set of wheels does, and it needs declaring rather than assuming. Most insurers take it in their stride once they are told. The only time it becomes a real problem is when it was never mentioned and then surfaces in the middle of a claim.
My DPF light has come on and I do nothing but long runs. What does that tell you?
It tells us the driving is not the cause, which narrows things down usefully. If the filter is getting the hot sustained running it needs and still loading up, something upstream is making more soot than it should. A leaking injector, a turbo passing oil, a sticking EGR valve or a temperature sensor reading wrong are the usual suspects, and each of those is a diagnostic job rather than a software one.
Do you take particulate filters off?
No, and there is no version of the question where the answer changes. Removal is an MOT failure and makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road, and we will not write software that pretends a missing filter is still fitted. Ask us about blanking or emulating EGR and AdBlue and you will get the same refusal. Those systems get diagnosed, cleaned, force regenerated where appropriate and repaired instead.
The car is still under manufacturer warranty. Should I leave it alone for now?
Tell us that when you ring and you will get a straight answer for your circumstances. A warranty can be affected if a fault is later traced back to the software, and finance or lease agreements sometimes carry their own conditions about modifications. The original file being kept means the car can go back to standard, but knowing where you stand beforehand is far better than finding out afterwards.
Would a petrol car get anything worthwhile from this?
A turbocharged petrol usually does and they respond well to a properly written file. A naturally aspirated one has much less spare margin in its software, and on some of those the honest answer is that what you would gain does not justify what you would spend. Give us the exact engine when you call and we will put yours in one camp or the other before you commit.
What should I have ready before I phone?
Make, model, year and engine size, whereabouts in Ashby, Packington or Shellbrook the car sits, and what you are hoping it will do differently. Mention any warning lights and any recent garage work. Battery condition matters more than people expect, since writing to an ECU needs steady voltage throughout, so flag it if you already know yours is tired.
