ECU Remapping in Drayton (near Daventry)
There are two Draytons on this site and this is the Northamptonshire one, half a mile from Daventry. It sits about thirteen and a half miles south of our Lutterworth workshop, which puts it among the further places we cover and makes a visit here something we plan rather than squeeze in.
Which Drayton this page is about
Worth clearing up before anything else. This page covers the Drayton that sits right on the edge of Daventry, about half a mile away, in Northamptonshire. There is a second Drayton further east on this site and it is a different village with its own page. If you are reading this and Daventry is your nearest town, you are in the right place. If it is not, ring and say where you actually are and we will sort it out in ten seconds.
The geography here is not the same as the Leicestershire villages we cover. Daventry is on the doorstep, Rugby is around eight and a half miles away and Northampton a little under twelve. Nothing large is close, which means almost every journey that matters is a proper journey rather than a two mile hop, and that is genuinely relevant to whether mapping your car is worth the money.
That pattern suits an engine. Settled running at a steady speed for a sustained stretch is what a modern turbo diesel was designed around, and it is also where a well written map does its most useful work. Village driving beside a city is the hard case. Driving out of a Northamptonshire village towards Rugby or Northampton several times a week is the easy one.
Getting here is a planned run, and we are honest about that
Thirteen and a half miles south of the workshop, over the county line, means we do not just appear. We work out the day around it, so the more notice you can give the better the chance of getting a time that suits you rather than the one that is left. Say when you ring whether mornings or afternoons work, and whether the vehicle is somewhere it can stay put for a couple of hours.
Everything comes to the vehicle. A driveway is the easiest version of this, a quiet bit of street usually works, and a workplace car park is fine if whoever runs it has said yes. What actually matters is that the vehicle can sit with the engine able to run, and that there is somewhere sensible within a short distance to drive it properly once the file is on. There is more about how that works on the mobile ECU remapping in Northampton page.
The other option is that you come to us. The workshop is on Rugby Road in Lutterworth and nothing about the job changes if the car arrives under its own steam instead of us arriving at it. Some people prefer that, particularly if home parking is awkward. Either way the visit itself is usually an hour to ninety minutes, and it is the same work at the same price.
Ring before you book anything inTell us the vehicle, the weekly mileage and which way you normally point it. If mapping it is not worth your money, you will hear that first.
Call 07773 694570The file is written around your vehicle, not around its engine code
The first thing that happens is that the calibration already sitting on your ECU is read off and kept. Then the engine is logged on the road so the numbers we work from are what your vehicle is doing rather than what its specification says it ought to be doing. Fuelling, boost and timing are adjusted from there, and the car is logged again afterwards to check the change landed where it was meant to.
What you notice is not a figure. It is the middle of the rev range getting stronger, so a gradient that used to need a gear no longer does, and joining something already moving at speed takes less effort and less right foot. On roads where you are covering ground rather than crawling, that is the part of the engine you live in, so that is what gets the attention. We do not quote power numbers because we cannot stand behind them.
We also say no fairly often. A stored fault, a service that is overdue, a tired clutch or a cooling system already working hard are all reasons to leave a vehicle alone, because extra torque brings an existing weakness forward and it never picks a convenient day to do it. If that is the answer, you get told before anybody commits to a date, not after a deposit. See performance remapping in Rugby for what the work involves when the vehicle is in good order.
Daventry, Staverton, Welton and Long Buckby
Because Drayton is so close to Daventry, most people near here could reasonably land on either page. The Daventry page is half a mile away in practice, Staverton is under two miles, Welton is a shade over two and Long Buckby is around five. All of them are the same service, the same van turning up and the same conversation, so there is nothing to work out before you ring.
If somebody else near you is thinking about the same thing, mention it. Two vehicles in one village on one day makes the trip south work better for everybody and it is the sort of thing that makes a preferred time easier to agree. Ring 07773 694570 with the vehicle details and roughly where in the village it sits, and we will tell you straight whether it is worth doing.
Remapping in Drayton: your questions answered
Is this the Drayton near Daventry or the other one?
This page is the Northamptonshire village sitting about half a mile from Daventry. There is another Drayton covered on this site further east, and it has a separate page of its own. If you are not certain which applies to you, do not worry about it. Ring and describe the road or the nearest town and it takes no time at all to work out.
How far are you from Drayton?
Around thirteen and a half miles, with the workshop on Rugby Road in Lutterworth and the village to the south of it, across into Northamptonshire. That is a planned run rather than something dropped into a gap, so booking a few days ahead gives you a much better chance of the time you actually want rather than whatever is spare.
Do I have to bring the vehicle to Lutterworth?
No. The service is mobile by default and we come to where the vehicle is. Plenty of people here prefer that because it means nothing has to be dropped off or collected. If you would rather come to the workshop on Rugby Road you are welcome to, and the work, the time it takes and what it costs are all identical either way.
What do you need available at the address?
Room for the vehicle to sit with the engine able to run, and somewhere close by to drive it properly once the map is loaded. A driveway is ideal. A quiet street is usually workable. A work car park is fine provided whoever manages the site is happy about it. Tell us which of those it is when you book so nobody is surprised on the day.
Does the battery matter?
More than most people expect. Writing to an ECU needs a steady voltage held for several minutes at a time, and a battery that fires the engine up without complaint can still drop away under that sort of sustained load. If yours is elderly, or the vehicle has been standing for a while, say so when you ring and we will arrive set up for it.
Can it be put back to standard?
Yes, and that is not a special request. The original calibration is read off and stored before anything is written, so the vehicle can be returned to exactly the software it had when we arrived. It takes minutes. People ask when they are selling, when a lease is going back, or before a main dealer looks at something unrelated.
What should I expect to feel afterwards?
Mostly the middle of the rev range. Less reaching for a lower gear on a climb, an easier time getting up to speed when you join a faster road, and a vehicle that feels like it is working less hard for the same journey. On the sort of distances people cover from here, that middle section is where you spend your time, so that is what we aim at.
Do you need to tell my insurer, or do I?
You do, and you should. Treat it the same as any other modification and declare it. It is a short call and most insurers take it entirely in their stride. The version that causes genuine trouble is the one nobody mentioned, which surfaces when a claim is being assessed, and that is the worst possible time for it to come up.
Will you touch the DPF, EGR or AdBlue?
We diagnose them, clean them, run forced regenerations and repair what is faulty. We do not remove any of them and we will not write software that behaves as though a missing part is still fitted. Doing that fails an MOT and makes the vehicle unlawful to use on the road, so it is not something we will put our name to on any vehicle for any reason.
What is worth having ready before I call?
Make, model, year and engine size, roughly how many miles a week it covers and what sort of roads those miles happen on, and where in the village it will be parked. Mention any warning lights, recent work or anything that has been fitted. Ring 07773 694570 and that description alone will usually get you a fairly clear answer.
