ECU Remapping in Uppingham

Uppingham sits at the far eastern edge of the area we cover, roughly twenty two miles north east of the Lutterworth workshop. That is worth being straight about, because a trip out to Rutland is planned rather than squeezed in, and the conversation before it has to do more work than it would ten miles closer.

Twenty two miles, and what that honestly means

Nearer towns can be fitted around whatever else the day holds. Uppingham cannot, and pretending otherwise would only waste your time and ours. What it means in practice is a firm time rather than a loose window, a proper conversation about the vehicle beforehand so the right equipment travels, and a preference for sorting everything that can be sorted on the phone before anybody sets off.

That is not a drawback so much as a different shape of appointment. Once here, the visit runs exactly as it would anywhere else: the vehicle is worked on where it sits, the factory calibration is read and stored before anything is written, and the whole thing normally takes an hour to ninety minutes from arrival to handing the keys back.

It also means the phone call matters more. Tell us the make, model, year and engine, what the vehicle does in a normal week, and anything the dashboard has been saying. If the answer is that the job is not worth doing, far better to reach it in a two minute call than at the end of a long drive.

Rutland mileage is a different diet

Corby is the closest larger town at around seven miles, Kettering is thirteen and Leicester over seventeen, so very little driving from Uppingham is short. Most journeys of any purpose involve a decent stretch of open road at a settled speed, which is the easiest life a turbo diesel can have. The engine reaches temperature and stays there, and a filter generally gets the sustained heat it needs to look after itself.

What that kind of use rewards is a map biased towards the middle of the rev range rather than the top of it. Pulling out of a junction onto a fast road, overtaking something slow on a single carriageway without planning two gear changes first, and holding a speed on a long gradient without the engine sounding like it is working. Those are the moments the file gets written around.

It also changes the honest verdict on economy. Consistent open road distance is the best case there is for a fuel saving bias, because the benefit repeats itself on every journey instead of being lost in traffic. Whether it repays you still comes down to how many miles you genuinely cover.

The Rutland villages this page now covers

This page serves a wide spread of the surrounding villages as well as Uppingham itself, among them Lyddington, Bisbrooke, Ayston, Belton in Rutland, Braunston in Rutland, Brooke, Allexton, East Norton, Loddington, Knossington, Owston, Cold Overton, Leesthorpe and Launde Abbey. Once a trip out this way is arranged, anywhere in that spread is a matter of minutes, so none of it changes how a visit is booked.

If you happen to be closer to somewhere with its own page, use that one instead. Corby is around seven miles away, Cottingham about six, with Drayton and Ashley both within seven. The page you land on makes no difference to the work, only to how quickly we can work out where you actually are.

Making one trip do everything it can

Because the distance is what it is, it pays to raise everything at the enquiry stage rather than after the van has arrived. If the car is an automatic, the transmission software is part of the same discussion and doing both together avoids a second journey. If a diesel has been warning you about the filter, say so, because that is a diagnostic job and it needs the right approach planned in advance rather than improvised.

A few practical things decide whether a visit works. Somewhere the vehicle can sit with the engine able to run and the doors able to open, which on a driveway is never an issue. A battery in reasonable health, since writing to an ECU needs steady voltage throughout and a tired one is the usual reason a job has to be stopped. And roads nearby fit to drive on, because the logging afterwards is not optional.

There is more on how the mobile side of it works under mobile ECU remapping in Corby, which is the nearest larger town to you at about seven miles. Otherwise get in touch with the vehicle details and roughly where in Rutland you are, and a time can go in the diary. Being at the far edge of the area is only a problem if nobody plans for it, and planning for it is the easy part.

Remapping in Uppingham: your questions answered

Do you really come out as far as Uppingham?

Yes, though it is planned rather than casual. At roughly twenty two miles north east of the workshop in Lutterworth, Rutland sits at the outer edge of what gets covered, so a firm time is agreed instead of a rough window and the vehicle details are wanted in advance. Once here the visit is ordinary, and usually takes an hour to ninety minutes.

Would I be better bringing the car to Lutterworth?

Some people prefer to, and it is entirely welcome. It comes down to whether you would rather spend the driving time yourself or have it built into the appointment. Neither option changes the work: same equipment, same original file stored, same logging on the road before and after. Say which you would prefer when you ring and it gets arranged around you.

Which villages does this page cover?

A wide spread of them, including Lyddington, Bisbrooke, Ayston, Belton in Rutland, Braunston in Rutland, Brooke, Allexton, East Norton, Loddington, Knossington, Owston, Cold Overton, Leesthorpe and Launde Abbey. Once a trip this way is in the diary, all of them are a few minutes apart, so being in one of the villages rather than the town changes nothing about the arrangements.

Most of my driving is open road. Does that change what you would write?

It changes the emphasis considerably. Settled running at a decent speed rewards a map aimed at the middle of the rev range, which is where overtaking and holding speed on a gradient happen. It is also the kindest use a diesel can get, because the exhaust reaches temperature and stays there. Describe your typical week and the file gets written towards that.

Is an economy bias worth it out here?

It has a better chance here than in most places, because consistent open road distance is exactly where a fuel saving bias repeats itself. Whether it repays you still depends on how many miles you genuinely cover and what you spend on fuel. Give us the weekly figure and the arithmetic can be worked through with you rather than guessed at.

What do you need to know before setting off?

Make, model, year and engine size, whether it is manual or automatic, roughly where in Uppingham or the villages the vehicle sits, and what you want out of it. Any warning lights, recent garage work or symptoms matter too. Given the distance, that conversation decides whether the trip is worth making at all, and it is better had properly.

Can the engine and gearbox be done in one visit?

On an automatic, yes, and out here that is very much the sensible order. Adding torque and leaving the transmission software untouched means the box is making decisions based on an engine that no longer exists. Doing both together also saves a second journey, which matters more at twenty two miles than it would at five. Mention it at the enquiry stage.

My DPF light has been coming on. Can you look at that instead?

Yes, and it needs planning rather than improvising. That work starts with live data: pressure across the filter, the soot and ash figures the ECU is calculating, exhaust temperatures, and how many regenerations have been attempted against how many finished. Then a proper clean and a forced regeneration. Removing, blanking or emulating a DPF, EGR or AdBlue system is not something we do.

Can everything be undone if I want it undone?

Yes. Your original calibration is copied off and stored before a single value is changed, so the vehicle can be put back to how the factory left it. That comes up before a sale, at the end of a lease, or ahead of a dealer visit. Putting it back is quick, and no explanation is needed for wanting it.

What makes a spot workable for the visit?

Somewhere the vehicle can sit with the engine able to run and the doors able to open. A driveway is perfect and a quiet village street is normally fine. A battery in reasonable health matters, since an ECU needs steady voltage for the whole write. Somewhere sensible to drive nearby matters too, because the road logging afterwards is part of the job.

Just had a remap done by Mark and I couldn't be more happy. he's very informative on what he's doing and he's a really nice chap to speak to while he's working on the car. Couldn't recommend his services more.
