DPF Cleaning, Diagnostics and Forced Regeneration in Warwick

A particulate filter only empties itself when the exhaust gets hot and stays hot. That is a sustained condition, not a moment. Second and third gear at walking pace round the older part of town, stopping every fifty yards, never delivers it. The soot goes in, the temperature never arrives, and the counter in the ECU climbs quietly for months while the car feels completely normal.

For a lot of drivers here the saving grace is junction 15. A regular run out onto the M40, twenty minutes at a settled speed with the engine loaded, is exactly the condition a regeneration wants. Plenty of Warwick diesels are kept healthy by a commute nobody thinks of as maintenance.

Which is why the light so often appears after something changes. New job, working from home two days a week, a school run that replaced a motorway run. The driving pattern shifts, the motorway half disappears, and four months later a warning comes on that has nothing to do with anything breaking.

Reading the vehicle before anyone touches the filter

We start with live data rather than a code list. Differential pressure across the filter, the calculated soot load set against the ash load, exhaust gas temperatures, and the regeneration history: how many the ECU has attempted, how many it completed, and how many were abandoned part way. A car attempting and failing has a different problem from one that never attempts at all.

Then we set that against how you actually use it, which in Warwick is a genuinely useful question. If the vehicle does regular M40 mileage and the filter still blocks, your driving is not the cause and something upstream is producing more soot than the filter can burn. A leaking injector, a turbo passing oil, a stuck EGR valve or a pressure or temperature sensor reading wrong will all do it.

If it lives in town and rarely leaves, the pattern is the cause, and the honest fix has to address the pattern as well as the filter. Interrupted regenerations matter here too, because a two mile trip that ends with the key turned off mid cycle can leave things worse than before you set off.

Cleaning, forced regeneration, and knowing when to stop

Once we know what we are dealing with, the work is an on vehicle clean and a forced regeneration commanded through the ECU, followed by live data to confirm the pressure differential and the calculated load have genuinely come back down rather than just the light going out. If they have not, we have not finished, and we say so.

Soot burns. Ash does not. A filter carrying high ash loading, or one where the differential pressure stays stubbornly high after a successful cycle, has reached the end of its working life and no amount of cleaning changes that. Taking money for a regeneration that will not hold a month is not something we are interested in doing.

Sometimes the real job turns out to be the injector, the sensor or the EGR valve rather than the filter at all, and the filter was only the part that complained. If that is what the data says, that is what we will tell you.

What we will not do, and getting to you

We do not remove diesel particulate filters, and we do not write software that pretends a missing one is still fitted. It is an MOT failure, the vehicle is unlawful to use on the road afterwards, and it can cause you a serious problem with an insurer. The same goes for EGR and AdBlue. We diagnose them and repair them so they work as designed, and we will not blank, delete or emulate either.

Will a run down the M40 clear the light on its own?

It is worth trying if the light has only just appeared and the car is otherwise driving normally. Give it twenty minutes or so at a sustained speed, in a slightly lower gear than you would normally sit in, so the engine is genuinely loaded and the exhaust gets hot. If the light is still there afterwards, the filter is too loaded to self clear or something else is stopping the cycle completing.

I only drive round Warwick town centre. Is a diesel just wrong for me?

Not necessarily wrong, but it does need managing. Short low speed journeys are the hardest use a particulate filter can be given, because the exhaust rarely reaches the temperature a regeneration needs. If that is genuinely all your mileage, either the car needs a proper run on a regular basis or a petrol would suit you better next time. We would rather say that than pretend otherwise.

Do you remove DPFs?

No. Removing a filter from a road going vehicle is an MOT failure and makes the car unlawful to use on the road, and we will not write software that hides a missing one either. We diagnose, clean and force regenerate instead. If removal is what you are looking for, we are not the right people and we would rather tell you on the phone than waste your afternoon.

Why does mine keep blocking when I do the M40 most days?

That is actually the most useful thing you could tell us. If your driving should be clearing the filter and it still blocks, the driving is not the problem. Something upstream is putting in more soot than can be burned off, or something is stopping the cycle being triggered at all. Injectors, turbo seals, a stuck EGR valve and faulty pressure or temperature sensors are the usual suspects.

Can you do the work at my house in Warwick?

Usually yes. The diagnostics, the live data and the forced regeneration are all done at the vehicle, so a driveway or an off street space is fine. What we need is somewhere the car can sit safely with the engine running for a while, because a forced regeneration deliberately raises exhaust temperature and needs space and airflow around it rather than a tight spot between two other cars.

What exactly is a forced regeneration?

It is a regeneration cycle commanded deliberately through the ECU with the car stationary, instead of waiting for the vehicle to decide to run one while you drive. It raises exhaust temperature on purpose to burn off trapped soot. It is only appropriate when the loading is within a range the filter can safely clear, which is one of the things the diagnostics are there to establish first.

How do you tell a filter that can be cleaned from one that is finished?

Mostly from the live data. Soot can be burned off and ash cannot, so a filter with high calculated ash loading is at the end of its life whatever you do to it. The other tell is a differential pressure that stays high after a cycle has completed successfully. If we see that, cleaning it again is not going to change the outcome and we will say so.

The light came on a few months after I changed jobs. Coincidence?

Probably not. It is one of the most common patterns we see in this area. The motorway half of someone's week disappears, the filter stops getting the sustained heat it had been quietly relying on, and the loading climbs for a few months before anything shows on the dash. The car has not developed a fault, its diet has changed, and the fix has to account for that.

Can a blocked DPF fail an MOT?

It can. A diesel is checked for visible smoke and for evidence that the filter is present and intact, and a heavily loaded or faulty filter can push the readings outside the limits. A car in limp mode with warnings lit is also unlikely to have a comfortable test. If a test is coming up and the light is on, it is better dealt with before rather than after.

What about EGR and AdBlue faults?

We diagnose and repair both. AdBlue problems in particular are often a heater, a quality or level sensor, a crystallised injector or a line rather than the whole system, and they are worth diagnosing properly before anyone starts replacing expensive parts hopefully. EGR valves that are sticking with carbon can often be cleaned and freed. What we will not do is blank, delete or emulate either system.

Will remapping the car fix a filter that keeps blocking?

No, and anybody telling you it will is selling you something. Software does not unblock a filter. Once the underlying cause is genuinely sorted, a properly written map can reduce how much soot the engine produces in the first place, which helps the filter stay on top of things. That is a sensible second step, not the repair.

What should I have ready when I ring?

The vehicle, the mileage, whether the light is steady or flashing, whether it has dropped into limp mode, and honestly what it does in a normal week. Town only, motorway only, or the Warwick mixture of both. That last one is the question most people are not expecting and it is usually the one that tells us most before anything gets plugged in.
